As I sit here munching away on dry Frosted Shredded Wheat cereal (with the accompanying cup of tea) it occurs to me that I owe the fans of Rawkfist a bit of nostalgic thanks. For constantly putting up with the atrocious amount of high scores we’ve given out this past half year. For listening to RawkCast (even if you little bitches don’t spread the word to anyone at all). For sitting by idly and not causing a ruckus during our numerous hiatus’ (hiati?). Hell, even for reading our one Scissors for Lefty review and giving us hate comments. Seriously, you have no idea how happy that made us.

As such, I dedicate this review to you, readers of Rawkfist, in hopes that it might take you back to a simpler time of dark humor, love songs, ghosts and ghouls, crappy stop-motion and cult classics. I speak, of course, about The Nightmare Before Christmas.

You might remember last year (2007) when a 3D version of the classic was re-released into theatres around mid-October. There was talk of a redoing of the soundtrack to the movie. It sort of happened, but it sort of didn’t. Let me give you the down low.

For one reason or another, Disney decided not to redo the entire album last year with the 3D movie release. They re-released the old soundtrack with six new tracks on it by numerous popular artists at the time such as Marilyn Manson, Fiona Apple, Fall Out Boy, etc. This went over fairly well and there was a resurgence of love for the ol’ NMBC (pronounced Nim Bic). Disney saw the perfect opportunity and began work on a full remastering of the original soundtrack with the likes of All-American Rejects, Flyleaf, Korn, The Polyphonic Spree, Rise Against, Amy Lee of Evanescence fame, Plain White Ts, Shiny Toy Guns and many others. No one band has multiple songs on the album.

It dropped September 30th, 2008 and everyone went bat shit. Fans crammed into stores to buy this masterful piece of work and most businesses claim to have run out of copies in the first few days of sales. A few even had BACK ORDERS for this thing. What’s the Rawkfist skinny, you ask? I was just getting to that.

Nightmare Revisited (heretofore referred to as NMR) is an absolutely fantastic concept album. You couldn’t ask for a more rounded album. With respect to track length, “songs” range from the short and sweet “Opening” (0:58) to the epically rendered orgasm that is “Town Meeting Song” (8:57). Every single song has been redone by SOMEONE and almost all of them extremely well.

I say almost all of them due to the song “Jack’s Obsession” by Sparklehorse. I don’t know how this thing got on the CD but it is an oddly shit song amidst a sea of awesome. Barring this and maybe one too many instrumental songs, this album is absolutely perfect. It breathes new angelic life into a long dormant franchise that has been begging for a makeover since ’02.

I must be repeating myself by now but I cannot stress enough how well this CD was compiled. Usually when you get a remastering of a movie soundtrack you end up with shit quality mixed with shit songs and shit bands no one has ever heard about. Amy Lee’s rendition of “Sally’s Song” makes your heart melt while “Christmas Eve Montage” by Rjd2 uses hardly a kernel of the original tune and yet somehow still sounds like you’ve been listening to it since 1993.

As if to make sure I had as little qualms with the album as possible the whole thing even lacks that final bit of chrome polish. It feels worn and old, like its movie counterpart, but still comfortable. Like a pair of old jeans that have been worn just enough to be as comfortable as possible.

The Point – If you don’t pick this CD up you’ll kick yourself for the rest of your life. You probably won’t recognize almost half of the contributing artists but don’t let that hinder you, this album is gold and deserves to be listened to by everyone. Buy yourself a copy. Buy your mom a copy. Buy your 3 year old sister who has never seen the movie a copy! Just make sure you listen to this thing.
